From Booklet
Harry Belafonte celebrated his 73rd birthday this year. In those seven decades he has contributed to the World his talents as singer, actor and humanitarian. Since 1987 he has been UNICEF's Goodwill Ambassador, following expertly in Danny Kaye's footsteps. He has spent his time tirelessly in both the civil rights movement and other humanitarian causes and although his legacy of recorded music will live on, perhaps his efforts for the human race will have an even longer-lasting impact.
He was born in Harlem, New York on May 1st, 1927. His parents were Caribbean immigrants, and when he was eight years old he was to return to Jamaica with his mother, and to remain there for the next five years. When he returned to the USA he dropped out of school and enlisted in the US Navy. After he had completed his service he settled in New York and joined the American Negro Theatre and wished for a career as an actor. He went on to study at the famed Dramatic Workshop led by Erwin Piscator, and worked with contemporaries such as Marlon Brando and Tony Curtis.
Harry's musical career was more by accident than design. A singing role in a drama led to a series of cabaret engagements. This led to Harry opening his own cabaret club. He first recorded in 1949, but singing purely pop on the Jubilee label. He began to study American folk music and the music of the West Indies. Together with guitarist Millard Thomas he made his debut at the legendary jazz club in Greenage Village, the Village Vanguard. These appearances led to a recording contract with RCA Victor. Until the 1970's Harry was to remain with RCA and these recordings form the major part of his recording career. After leaving the label in the early 70s he would record sparingly on less than a handful of albums.
It was after his appearance in the 1955 film "Carmen Jones" that Harry shot to fame and his recording career really took off. In the late 50's and early 60s he scored both chart success and made albums that were to achieve great critical acclaim. The twenty-two tracks on this collection highlight all these aspects of Harry's recording catalogue. Chart success in the UK took place in the four years from 1957 to 1960. In fact in 1957 four songs dominated the charts for the whole of the year. "The Banana Boat Song" and "Island In The Sun" were both co-penned by Belafonte and come from his study of the folk culture of that region. Millard Thomas' guitar features on both tracks, and again Millard is the solo instrumentalist on "Scarlet Ribbons", a song so many have tried to copy, but this definitive version cannot be Harry Belafonte celebrated his 73rd birthday this year. Millard Thomas' guitar features on both tracks, and again Millard is the solo instrumentalist on "Scarlet Ribbons", a song so many have tried to copy, but this definitive version cannot be matched. The remaining chart title that year was "Mary Boy's Child", a perennial hit each Christmastide, we have chosen not to include it in this collection so as to make room for tracks not so seasonal.
This collection features both the humour and romance of Harry Belafonte. Listen to "Man Piaba" for a 1950's Caribbean biology lesson and the infectious humour of "Mama, Look At Bubu". Contrast this with the beauty of "Gomen Nasai (Forgive Me)" and "Don't Ever Leave Me", this latter song composed by Lord Burgess, whose real name was Irving Burgie and Belafonte's co-writer on those early songs mentioned In 1962 Harry made a critically acclaimed album entitled "Midnight Special". This album featured the best of American folk tradition and also introduced a new young musician by the name of Bob Dylan. This album was the first ever-recorded appearance by Mr. Dylan and it is his harmonica that we hear on the title track featured here. This collection also features recordings of 1960s and 70's contemporary material. Paul Simon would be proud of Harry's interpretation of "Scarborough Fair", as would Neil Diamond with Harry's slightly more sympathetic version of "Mr. Bojangles". The humanitarian in Harry is eloquent in his reading of "Abraham, Martin and John".
For over thirty years Harry Belafonte recorded for the RCA label. This collection tries to represent all fascets of this legacy. The recordings are digitally remastered from the original recording sessions; therefore the finest quality sound is now available for both those of us who have the originals in our collections, and for a whole new generation of admirers of good music. Harry's public appearances are all too few nowadays. In the 1980's the film "Beetlejuice" revived his recording of 'Jump In The Line" and a new generation were privy to this infectious dance number. The mid-90's brought his return to our cinema screens in the superb film drama "White Man's Burden", and for those on the other side of the Atlantic a TV special in 1996. However, in place of new appearances we will be content with these masterly recordings to revive in us the spirit of love, endevour and culture so badly needed in the 21st Century. The contribution Harry Belafonte has made to popular music is legendary, the title "King of Calypso" is so richly deserved, as he lay down the foundations of a musical heritage that others would emulate and nurture.
